Are you ready to get your Ls? If you are 16 years old, or older, and want to get your learner licence in NSW there are 4 steps you need to take before you can grab the car keys and start the engine with your supervisor beside you.
First of all you need to learn what you will be tested on. Everything you need to know to answer the questions in the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) is in the Road Users’ Handbook and the Driver licence section of the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) website. A great way to prepare is to look at practice questions online which have all the potential questions you may be asked.
Secondly, you need to book and pay for the Driver Knowledge Test online. Lots of people sit for this test each week so you’ll need to choose from a list of available times. You can change the time you choose up to one day before the test if you need to. The fee that you pay by credit card online when you book is $46*.
Thirdly, go to your nearest RMS location at the time you booked with ID. Proof of identity can be your birth certificate or passport and you will need to provide proof of your signature and address. Your eyesight will be checked as well, and your photo taken. You will need to fill out the licence application form and, of course, you will do the 45 question Driver Knowledge Test.
Finally, when you pass the DKT, you will need to pay a learner licence fee of $25. You will get a paper log book to write your driving hours in and either your licence or a temporary paper licence to use when driving until your plastic licence arrives by post. Congratulations! You are now an L plater.
- Know what types of questions are in both parts of the test. The first part of the test has 15 general knowledge questions and the second part has 30 questions about road safety.
- Take your time and read the questions carefully. The good news is there is no time time limit so relax and focus**.
- You have access to all the answers so keep studying them. Click here for a PDF list of them all.
- Do the free online practice test over and over again. This online test is helpful because it is just like the real DKT at the RMS. Usually people get a few wrong but keep doing the test until they get them right. There is an iPhone app version too.
* The RMS may increase their fees from 1 July each year to keep up with general price increases. The prices listed here were correct at the time of writing on 23/6/2019. To check for increases visit the RMS website.
** You need to get at least 12 of the 15 general knowledge questions correct and at least 29 of the 30 road safety questions correct to pass the test.
